- Modafinil 100 mg tablet is a prescribed medication used in the treatment of narcolepsy, a condition in which there are irregularities in the sleep-wake cycle, Obstructive Sleep Apnea – a condition where the breathing stops for a short period or the breathing is shallow, leading to a lack of sleep at night and day time sleepiness.
- It improves wakefulness helps you to remain awake and reduces the tendency to nod off during the day, thus restoring the normal sleep cycle.
- This tablet is also used to reduce excessive sleepiness in those who do not have a sleeping schedule due to changes in the shifts of work.
- However, the uses of tablets mentioned here are not exhaustive, there may be other conditions for which this medication may be used at the doctor’s discretion.
Composition
The active ingredient of Modalert 100mg is Modafinil 200mg.
Mechanism of Action of Drugs
Modafinil 100 tablet modulates the levels of chemical messengers (histamine, norepinephrine, serotonin, dopamine) in the brain and exerts a stimulant effect to reduce extreme sleepiness.
Contraindications and Caution
Patients with the following conditions are suggested to seek advice from their healthcare professionals before taking the Modafinil 100mg Tablet:
- Hypersensitivity to any of the components used in modafinil 100 tablet.
- Severe hepatic impairment

- Hypertension
- Seizure disorders
- Psychiatric disorders
Side and Adverse Effects
The following side effects may or may not occur during the usage of Modafinil 100mg. It is generally well tolerated when taken in the prescribed dosage guidelines. More common ones are generally mild and may or may not include:
Rare but more serious adverse effects may include:
- Insomnia
- Dizziness
- Jaundice
- Fever and chills
- Skin rash or hives
- Hallucinations
How to Use
Don’t exceed the dose prescribed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet immediately after opening the tablet from the strip. Do not chew/crush/break the tablet.
Avoid missing or forgetting the dose. If you do, take it as soon as you remember; but if it is almost time for your next dose skip the missed dose and take it at a subsequent regularly scheduled time. Do not take two doses at the equivalent time which is dangerous to your health.
For best results, take the tablet with food daily at the same time preferably in the morning.
This tablet is not recommended for children.
Overdosage
Avoid taking more than the prescribed dosage. In case of an overdose, promptly seek medical advice. Depending on the dosage, symptoms may vary but you may experience the following signs or symptoms:
- Unusual bleeding or bruising
- Chest pain
- Difficulty in passing urine
- Black or tarry stools
- Trouble in breathing
Warnings and Precautions
Take Modafinil 100 tablets only on the advice of a medical practitioner. Dosage adjustment or complete avoidance of the medication could be required in the following conditions:
Kidney:
Among people with renal problems, caution is recommended. If you have any renal problems, it is highly recommended that you consult a doctor before the consumption of this medicine.
Liver:
Caution is advised among people with liver problems. Dose adjustments may be needed. If you have any hepatic problems, it is highly recommended that you consult a doctor before the consumption of this medicine.
Pregnancy:
Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant because safety during pregnancy is not yet established.
The benefits and risks should be discussed with the doctor before taking this tablet.
Lactation:
There is no information regarding the presence of modafinil in human milk, or breastfed infant, or its effects on milk production.
However, inform your doctor if you are a nursing mother as it is still unknown if it causes harm to the fetus or not.
Alcohol:
Do not take alcohol during treatment with Modafinil 100 due to the increased risk of drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired judgment.
Driving:
Modafinil 100 tablet decreases alertness, affects your vision, or makes you feel dizzy. It is advised that you do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or be involved in any work that may demand your attention or physical strength.
Food:
Grapefruit juice or grapefruit may increase the side effects or actions of Modafinil.
Drug Interactions:
Clopidogrel, Deflazacort, Ranolazine, Fentanyl, Bosutinib
Always inform your doctor if you are taking any other medicines which include medicines, supplements, and herbal tonics that you buy without a prescription.
Precautions
- Keep the medicine out of reach of children.
- Do not use the medicine beyond its expiry.
- Store the medicine at room temperature (15-25 degrees Celsius).
FDA Pregnancy Category
Category C: There are no adequate well-controlled studies of Modafinil 100 in pregnant women. Limited data on this tablet in pregnant women is not sufficient to determine the drug-associated risk for major defects or miscarriage.
